The course curricula was jointly developed by practitioners in the employment world, the training providers (Universities and TVETs) and RUFORUM. The course aims to:

  1. Inculcate employer-demands in the training of the prospective cohorts;
  2. Enhance 21st century skills in the training; and
  3. Establish and/or strengthen the linkages between employers and training providers.
Expected outcomes
  1. Training curricula better aligned to employer and job creation needs;
  2. Uni and TVET graduates better equipped for sustainable employment and / or job creation; and
  3. Employer-Training provider working relationship strengthened to facilitate training quality improvement.
Mode of delivery
The course shall be delivered as integral parts or units under the already existing curricula to avoid long approval and accreditation processes.
The content should be delivered using a hands-on approach where the trainees in competency-based approach.
The assessment should also be competency-based to ascertain what the trainees can do beyond the knowledge acquired.
Course duration
This will depend on the schedule for the course units or modules into which the content shall be embedded. In general, it should not exceed 6 months.

Overview

This course is designed to empower early career scientists with essential mentorship and leadership skills to thrive in dynamic research and academic environments. It aims to build their capacity to lead research teams, mentor junior colleagues, and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders in the agri-food innovation system.
The course aims to i) enhance self-awareness and leadership potential, ii) share the principles and practice of effective mentorship, and iv) develop strategic communication and team management skills.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. demonstrate improved confidence in leadership roles, 
  2. apply mentorship frameworks within their institutions, 
  3. foster inclusive and collaborative research environments.
The course will be delivered through a blended learning approach combining interactive online sessions, self-paced modules, case studies, and group-based experiential activities. In addition, participants will engage in peer learning and receive guidance from experienced mentors.

The course will run over a period of 6 weeks, with an estimated total workload of 30 hours.
